Important Updated Closure Information for 3-30-2020

March 30, 2020

Dear Santiam Canyon,

We received an important notification from the Oregon Department of Education late this evening. The official notification is linked HERE. We are still processing this information and planning our next steps. I will follow up with additional information once we have it ready, as we prepare to launch a more robust distance learning program for our students.

According to Colt Gill, Director of ODE, “we also foresee the strong possibility that our students may not come back through our school house doors this academic year.”

No official changes have been made to our closure dates, yet the state is preparing for the possibility of a longer closure. The current closure is through April 28, yet there is a real possibility this could change.

As a parent and as an educator, I am completely saddened for our students by this news, yet I also understand the severity of the situation we are currently in. We will get through this, and we will continue to do our best to come up with new solutions for distance learning and supporting our students in these challenging times. Food deliveries will continue as scheduled, with no plans of stopping this service.

Now, more than ever, and even from our social distances, we need to Stand Together as a community. Together, we can continue to do great things for the youth of the Santiam Canyon.

Thank you for your support and patience. More information will be out soon, as we process the possibility of closure for the remainder of the school year and new guidance for setting up distance learning.

Sincerely,

Todd Miller, Superintendent
